President’s report.
- Board of Governors Meeting. The Higher Ed Immigration Portal estimates that 8,000 undocumented students graduate from Florida high schools annually and that there are sixty thousand undocumented students in Florida higher education. [There are approximately a million students altogether in Florida higher education.] The Board of Governors is approved a regulation to bar undocumented students from Florida universities.
Some of the legislation consists of bills provided to legislators by organizations such as the anti-union group Freedom Foundation. [For example, Text for the bill requiring majority turnout in certification elections was provided by the Freedom Foundation – see For Thee But Not For Me. However, Gemini regrets that it is unable to conduct a Turnitin-type plagiarism check on legislative bills.] - Labor Day picnic. Many of our problems come from Tallahassee, and our Administration is unwilling or unable to stand up to the politicians. This makes the midterm election – including the election of the next governor – a priority.
- Bullying and Harassment. There are a few administrators with a history of harassment or bullying complaints. Cases resulting in litigation are often settled with Non-Disclosure Agreements – and administrators with bad records later stepped down.
- Legal Situation. Discussion.
- Certification. The state office of UFF is preparing for possible decertifications; this includes revising the state office budget, which will affect budgets of individual chapters.
- Constitution and Bylaws. We need revisions to bring these documents up to date.
Reports.
- Grievances. We have three non-renewed and two suspended members. We are proceeding.
- Membership. Discussion.
- Treasury. To prepare for a cut in the rebate, the Treasurer will present a revised budget.
