Townhall on Budget Cuts and the Contract

Everyone is Invited

On Friday, October 23, at 5 pm, the United Faculty of Florida will hold a Townhall Meeting on budget cuts announced by the USF Administration. The Townhall will be held over Zoom, and all USF employees are invited. For a Zoom invitation, contact the Chapter Secretary.

In response to the Governor's decision to "hold back" a percentage of budget allocations, and in anticipation of budget cuts the Legislature may impose after the election, on October 15 the USF Administration presented the following "Reduction Targets" in recurring Education & General (E & G) funding by 30 June 2022:

CollegeTotal Reduction
Arts & Sciences10.75%
Behavioral & Community Science8.66%
Business11.46%
Education35.47%
Engineering5.25%
Honors6.73%
Marine Science8.01%
Global Sustainabiity47.87%
The Arts6.77%
In addition to the new policy on Faculty Separations from Employment and Layoff adopted on 22 September 2020, a revision to the policy on Faculty Benefits and Hours of Work (revisions in red mentioning furloughs, starting on line 225) has been proposed; the comment period ends on October 20.

We should mention that per Section 8.4A of the UFF USF Collective Bargaining Agreement (see page 10), furloughs cannot be unilaterally imposed, but they can be negotiated individually. Union members may want to contact UFF or attend a chapter meeting if approached over a furlough. Layoffs are regulated by Article 13, which brings us to the Townhall Meeting this Friday at 5 pm.

In the near future, UFF will hold a townhall meeting on early retirement, hosted by Steve Permuth, so stay tuned.

A Survey of the Faculty During the Pandemic

The USF Chapter of the United Faculty of Florida is surveying faculty concerns and attitudes about job conditions at USF with respect to the Covid-19 pandemic. We ask all USF employees in the UFF USF Bargaining Unit - UFF members and non-members alike - to participate. It is an anonymous survey with 13 questions. To take the survey, click here.

USF United Support Fund for Food Pantries
