ANNOUNCEMENTS

YOUR UNION NEEDS YOU!

The USF Chapter of the United Faculty of Florida is holding its election this spring.

The UFF USF Chapter election this spring is now underway and we strongly encourage UFF USF members to participate, by running for offices and seats, or at least by voting. The positions open for election are:

  • The four elective offices: the president, the vice president, the secretary, and the treasurer.
  • The seats in the legislative bodies of our affiliates: the United Faculty of Florida Senate and the Florida Education Association Delegate Assembly. UFF senators also serve on the Chapter Council, which oversees chapter business.
The deadline for nominations is March 7.

To nominate someone, a UFF member should go to the online Nomination form. Self-nominations are encouraged.

The UFF Bargaining Team Wants Your Opinion on Your Salary Package

The United Faculty of Florida (representing UFF USF faculty and professionals) and the USF Administration (representing the USF Board of Trustees) are bargaining a successor to the 2010 - 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the contract between USF faculty and professionals and the USF Board of Trustees. The UFF Bargaining Team would like your reaction to a question about salaries. The UFF Bargaining Team asks:

Would you be agreeable to the UFF accepting for your compensation package during 2013 - 2016:

  • For the first year, 2013 - 2014, a 2 % merit raise and a 1 % discretionary raise. These raises would not be retroactive, but would come into effect upon ratification of the contract.
  • For the second year, 2014 - 2015, a 1.5 % merit raise and a 1 % discretionary raise.
  • For the third year, 2015 - 2016, merit and discretionary raises are to be negotiated.
What do we mean by "merit raise" and "discretionary raise"?
  • A merit raise is determined from your annual evaluations, based on a formula. A 2 % merit raise means that an amount equaling 2 % of the total payroll (for a total raise of about $ 2.7 million) will be distributed to faculty and professionals according to the merit pay formula.
  • A discretionary raise (officially, an "Administrative Discretionary Increase") is at the discretion of the Administration: the Administration may give any amount to any employee in the UFF USF Bargaining Unit. A 1 % discretionary raise means that an amount equaling 1 % of the total payroll (for a total raise of a little less than $ 1.4 million) may be distributed by the Administration (the Administration is not obligated to distribute all of it).
The Bargaining Team would like to know whether such a package would be acceptable, and if you have any comments. Please respond to the UFF Chief Negotiator, Professor Robert F. Welker, at his off-campus email address, and / or to the UFF Chapter President, Professor Art Shapiro, at his off-campus address.
